Chairmen and Speaker Biographies

DAY ONE
Mike Drewry Mr Drewry is in charge of a multi-disciplined department covering Waste Management, Regulatory Services and Analytical Services and is Chair of the Council's Integrated Waste Management Partnership Board. He is an adviser to both COSLA and LACORS and is also a Council Member of the Trading Standards Institute.
Nigel Mattravers Nigel is a chartered civil and waste management engineer with some 18 years experience in the waste industry. Nigel has worked extensively overseas, particularly Hong Kong, as well as the UK. Formerly with Mouchel Parkman he now heads the waste management team of Grant Thornton.
David Border David Border is a microbiologist who has worked in commercial composting for 20 years. He is now Head of Composting for ADAS and is involved in all aspects of designing, setting up and operating large-scale composting facilities. His particular speciality is in the use of batch tunnel composting systems.
John Cowan John has been Senior Project Advisor in the Recycling Delivery Project since August 2003. His particular specialism is in providing advice to Local Authorities on large, long-term projects and public/private partnerships. To date he has been involved in projects in Midlothian, Dumfries & Galloway, Dundee, Highland and North/South Lanarkshire.
Sam Moir Samantha has 6 years experience in the environmental education sector since completing her degree in Ecological Science. Samantha joined Glasgow Recycle in January of this year and currently co-ordinates the scheme, her specific remit being primary and nursery education. 
Bruce McLean Bruce began his career in Dundee with Timex Corporation, designing Integrated circuits used in the Sinclair Spectrum computers. In 1995 he joined a company who pioneered the recovery of electronic components from printed circuit boards. In 2000 he moved to CCL (North) and was appointed Managing Director in January 2002.
Russell Imrie Councillor Russell Imrie is a Councillor on Midlothian Council and is a former Councillor of Edinburgh District Council. He is the COSLA Spokesperson on Waste Management and is a board member of the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency “SEPA” Main Agency Board. He is also Chairman of ReMade Scotland.
David Carpenter A General Manager for the recycling division of Premier Waste Management Ltd, with kerbside box collections from 415,000 households, since December 2002. Recycling Officer for Durham City Council for 9 years prior to that, during which the authority was a finalist in the National Recycling Awards for its kerbside collection scheme.
Anna Maris Anna is the founder and CEO of Resource Publishing, a social enterprise communications company, which produces publications, recycling campaigns and marketing communications. Anna was previously with the Community Recycling Network and also a journalist in Sweden, Russia and the UK. She has an MA in Journalism Studies from Westminster University.
Kim Warren Cambridgeshire has been leading the way in the use of mobile vehicles for education and public awareness for ten years. Kim has combined her extensive skills in environmental education, community involvement and teaching to create a unique and evolving project with Cambridgeshire’s Second Recycling Bus.
Andrew Simmons As Chief Executive of the leading plastics recycling development and consultancy organisation RECOUP, Andrew has delivered many operational and strategic projects to increase the scale, economics and effectiveness of plastics recycling programmes. He has also worked on international recycling projects and is a Director of the European Plastics Recovery and Recycling Associations Organisation.
Joe Speck Joe has been working as a policy advisor at Defra for two years. His work has included policy development on the illegal disposal of waste or ‘fly-tipping’. Recent work has focused on the anti-social behaviour and local environmental quality agendas. He has also worked on the development of the Flycapture database.
   
DAY TWO  
Paul Tetlaw Paul has considerable experience in the water industry and has initiated and chaired two major waste minimisation projects and was also General Manager at Scottish Water. He has a leading role in the voluntary sector in campaigning for sustainable transport solutions for Scotland and is vice chair of TRANSform Scotland.
Kyla Brand Kyla is Executive Director of AGENDA: Social Responsibility in Scotland supporting those who promote CSR in Scotland and across Europe. Previously with DTI, Gallup and Business in the Community, Kyla now works with Corporate Culture and Rocketscience UK. Recent projects include developing the Small Business Journey, and approaches to responsible procurement.
Courtney Hyde Payton Courtney Hyde Peyton (BA MSc[Cons]) is Managing Director of Thirdwave, an Edinburgh-based sustainability consultancy. In addition to directing SISP, she advises on commercial advantage in applying sustainability to large scale urban regeneration programmes, tourism, finance and Corporate Social Responsibility. She sits on the Steering Group of the Scottish Sustainable Development Forum.
Alan Jamieson Alan Jamieson has been working within the waste management industry for over ten years. His expertise ranges from clinical, pharmaceutical and chemical waste streams to industrial and commercial trade waste. Alan formed Jade Care three years ago and has developed a nation-wide customer focused organisation.
Jackie Downes Jackie has ten years experience working in waste management, recycling and producer responsibility. Her specialist areas are waste management strategy, recycling policy and producer responsibility including WEEE, packaging, ELVs and batteries. She has worked for both public and private sector on a range of waste management consultancy projects.
Allan Mowat Over 15 years of environmental management and protection experience, including four years at SEPA prior to being appointed Environment Manager at West of Scotland Water. A Chartered Member of the Institution of Water and Environmental Management, specialist areas include environmental regulation, environmental strategy, policy development, and Environmental Management Systems (EMS).
Simon Stockwell Career Civil Servant – joined Scottish Office in 1985. Held variety of posts including teachers’ salaries, building control, short secondment to Brussels, local government, animal waste, secondment to Secretary of State for Scotland and waste strategy. Took current post in August 2003.
George Chalmers George is a Senior Research Fellow in the Dept of Environmental Planning at Strathclyde University and is also working in collaboration with the Caledonian University Waste Management centre. Recently George has become a Senior Consultant with Resource Efficiency Management (REM) Ltd, a company that deals with a range of resource efficiency issues.
Stephen Burt Stephen is a Senior Business Environmental Adviser with the Business Environment Partnership, a Scottish based organisation offering free assistance with environmental management to local companies. He co-manages the project and has been undertaking waste minimisation work with a wide variety of size and types of company for over 6 years. 
David Telford David is a physicist and engineer. He started his working life within the nuclear industry, later becoming an environmental consultant. In 1999 he founded Factor Ten, on the belief that the potential for reducing costs and increasing the productive use of physical resources is enormous, perhaps as much as a factor of ten.
John Forbes As the Scotland Liaison Officer, John Forbes is responsible for maximising the benefits of WRAP to Scotland. Previously John worked for Midlothian Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise where he was responsible for the development and management of the Business Environmental Partnership.
James Donaldson James Donaldson is a chartered chemical engineer and set up WES in 1990 and has grown the company to 45 employees and a 4 million turnover. The company still finds home for wastes (more than 0.5 million tonnes since creation) as well as recycling around 10,000 tpa plastic scrap.
