Welcome

The Good Parenting Show is aimed at providing an opportunity for parents, people planning to have children (whether as natural parents, fostering or adoption) and professionals involved in child development, to see and learn about the wide range of goods, services, advice and support available to help meet the needs of children of all ages - from babyhood to adulthood.

The two-day event will include an exhibition, covering all aspects of parenting and bringing up of children from pre-natal to adolescence; from nursery to university.

It will offer an invaluable resource by pulling together, under one roof, suppliers and providers of essential products and services designed to support and assist those responsible for ensuring children achieve their full potential.

Venue

Assembly Rooms
George Street
Edinburgh

Date

19th & 20th January 2008

Background

The subject and issues relating to parenting have been brought into the public forum by:

  • Changing social trends ie for women to postpone the start of a family and to continue working after the birth of their children;
  • Increasing cost of bringing up and educating children;
  • Increasing number of family units which break up;
  • New bioscientific advances in genetics and human fertilisation;
  • Decline of the nation’s birth rate;
  • Increasing demand by a modern economy for an educated and skilled workforce;
  • Social costs of a young adult population lacking citizenship values.

Good parenting’ is being recognised and valued as an essential element for ensuring a dynamic, harmonious, productive and prosperous society in the future.

There is an acknowledgment of the need for provision of help, advice and training for parents, who often lack the time and support infrastructure, traditionally provided by family and the community.

Being a parent is a full-time job, but, in an increasingly complex and busy world, it is often difficult to know where to turn for information, advice and assistance.

Against this background, The Good Parenting Show will provide a shop window on products and services designed to improve the lives of children and a unique forum for learning, discussion and debate.
